Monkton Wyld Court
At Monkton Wyld Court in Dorset you have the space to create the retreat you want, whether that entails quiet contemplation, spiritual growth, socialising or exploring the beautiful expanses of countryside that surround it.
Communal rooms sleep up to six; twins, doubles and family rooms are also available or you can camp. Accommodation is basic, but comfortable and Individual heaters fill in for the lack of central heating. There is a sink in each room, but no en suites, although there are bathrooms on all floors. Water comes from a well and there is a reed-bed sewage system, so don’t flush the toilet unless you have to. Monkton is about sustainable living and recycling and the conservation of resources is a high priority.
If the gardens, local beaches and country walks are not enough, there is a Thursday hatha yoga class during term time and reiki, reflexology and massages are also available from £25 for an hour. Residential workshops aimed at spiritual and personal development are held throughout the year, including those run by the Eagle’s Wing Centre for Contemporary Shamanism.
Meals are hearty, organic and vegetarian. Breakfast is a delicious, homemade ‘help yourself’ affair; lunch and supper are available at extra cost or on a full-board or half-board basis. Special diets can be catered for.
There are 15 to 20 people in the resident Monkton community, one of whom will be your ‘linker’ – the person acting as liaison between you and the community and ensuring that your stay runs smoothly. They will show you round and answer any questions.
Guests are of all ages – couples, singles, young families - and include quite a few repeats. Take the train to Axminster, two hours from Bristol and four miles from Monkton Wyld. Book a cab in advance to pick you up.
